The results from this study suggest that simply eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids 2-3 times a week or taking a fish oil providing at least 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA daily reduce the risk of developing severe mental decline by nearly 50%. For example, analysis from the famous Framingham Heart Study found that people with higher blood levels of DHA reduced their risk of developing dementia by 47% when compared to people with lower levels of DHA. Of course, a higher intake of these omega-3 fatty acids is associated with better mood and mental function scores on their own. These results are game-changing because they show that B vitamins better slow the rate of brain atrophy in mild cognitive impairment in those with a good level of EPA+DHA. But for those with high baseline EPA+DHA levels, the B vitamins were very effective in preventing cognitive decline compared to the placebo. What the researchers found was that for people with low levels of EPA+DHA, the B vitamin supplement had little to no effect in preventing the loss of gray matter. Their cognitive performance was also measured, and the results compared with the baseline results from the start of the study. The participants were split into two randomly selected groups, who received either a B-vitamin supplement or a placebo pill over two years. More than 250 people with poor brainpower were given a set of tests to measure their cognition and levels of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in their blood. 4 Omega-3sĪnother study conducted at Oxford University found that having higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the brain boosted the benefits of B vitamins in improving cognitive function. In their conclusion, the Oxford researchers found that B-vitamin supplementation can slow the atrophy of specific brain regions that are associated with cognitive decline. Homocysteine can lead to increased oxidative damage to the brain and other tissues. Homocysteine is a metabolite of the amino acid methionine that will be increased if B12, B6, or folic acid levels are low. The researchers also found that those whose grey matter shrunk fastest had higher levels of homocysteine, and those with higher homocysteine levels initially received the greatest benefit from the B vitamin supplements. Upon completion of the two-year study, researchers found that those given the B vitamin supplement had about seven times less grey matter shrinkage than the placebo group. ![]() Atrophying (shrinking) grey matter is a sign of accelerated aging of the brain. īefore the trial and during the testing period, the researchers utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the patients’ atrophy levels of grey matter in their brains. Those levels of folic acid, B6, and B12 are what you might typically find in a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula. The patients were divided into two groups: one group took a daily supplement with 800 micrograms of folic acid, 20 milligrams of vitamin B6, and 500 micrograms of vitamin B12 the other group took a placebo supplement. 4 The study involved 156 elderly patients who had mild cognitive impairment and a high risk of developing severe loss of mental function. Let’s take a look first at a study conducted at Oxford’s Department of Clinical Neurosciences that highlights the impact of supplemental B vitamins. Not surprisingly, they work best when both are taken. Given the frequency of nutrient deficiency, especially in the elderly population, it is possible that many cases of impaired mental function and memory have a nutritional cause.ī vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids are critically important to brain function and memory are. ![]() Numerous studies have shown that brain function is directly related to nutritional status, especially for key nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. It is also important to point out that there is a very strong link between cardiovascular health and brain health. This article will focus on those with the most research support. There are many dietary supplement ingredients that promote improved brain health. Young or old, our nutritional status plays a vital role in determining how well our brain functions. ![]() ![]() The night before Chadwick’s birthday, Isolt had a dream that she met a Horned Serpent at a creek. She had promised to give him a wand but had none available other than the one she brought with her from Ireland. With no source of wands or wand materials available in America, Isolt worried about how she was going to give her adopted son Chadwick a present for his eleventh birthday. This Ilvermorny house was founded by Isolt Sayre herself after an encounter with a Horned Serpent. It’s said to represent the mind, and, according to J.K Rowling, the house tends to favor people with a more scholarly temperament. The Horned Serpent is a mythical animal with strong psychic and intellectual associations. However, Horned Serpent is actually closer to Ravenclaw in ideals and values. You wouldn’t be the first to assume that this house is the American equivalent to Hogwarts’ Slytherin house. This desire to fulfill her adopted sons’ dreams and her own childhood aspirations gave Isolt the inspiration to open the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and, with it, the Ilvermorny houses of Horned Serpent, Wampus, Thunderbird, and, of course, Pukwudgie. But because she was afraid of running into Gaunt again, she promised to start a new wizarding school just for them. She would tell them stories about Hogwarts that made them want to attend the English school just as badly as she did. Later on, Isolt would adopt a group of boys who became her and her husband James’ adopted sons. While living in the mountains, she saved a Pukwudgie from death. She realized that the Puritans wouldn’t be kind to a witch and decided to bail. ![]() Isolt found herself in North America after boarding the Mayflower in 1620. She eventually escaped by pretending to be a Muggle boy by the name of Elias Story. Her forceful isolation made Isolt think of Hogwarts as a magical paradise for witches and wizards of any descent. The rescue wasn’t a happy ending since Gaunt abused her and refused to let her attend Hogwarts because the school had started accepting Muggleborn witches and wizards. But when Isolt was only five, her family died in a tragic fire from which her aunt, Gormlaith Gaunt, rescued her. Despite their associations with what are essentially magical racists, Isolt’s parents cut ties in order to help Muggles by giving them magical medicine. Isolt Sayre, Ilvermorny’s founder, was a descendant of the pure-blood House of Gaunt, which had blood ties to Salazar Slytherin, the founder of House Slytherin. The school isn’t so much a branch of the older wizarding institution as a localized twist on it. Ilvermorny and its houses were all founded in 1627, about 637 years after Hogwarts itself was founded. The Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the American counterpart to the Hogwarts School, and it only came into existence because the founder of the American school couldn’t get into Hogwarts. Why Do We Even Have the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? But if you’re tired of the traditional four Hogwarts houses, the Ilvermorny houses of the American wizarding world might be more your style. Joining a Hogwarts house is just a literary fandom classic at this point. Its immersive world of magic lets you participate in a wider Harry Potter community by sorting yourself into one of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Now 20 years old, it’s not an exaggeration to say that J.K Rowling’s renowned fantasy series has been nothing short of revolutionary. The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has been a mainstay of internet culture since the first wave of kids raised on Harry Potter got online. But for all the jokes about how Millennials over-identify with their Hogwarts house, it’s hard not to join in on the fun. Millennials have been dragged, slandered, and generally laughed at on the internet by Gen Z for their obsession with the Harry Potter series. ![]() ![]() This cast list of who was in Licence to Kill includes both lead and minor roles. You might see an example that has only 5 of these things but 4 or less would be “finding a leprechaun sitting on a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow” rare. For the most part, every title block has the same 6 things on it regardless of who made it or how old it is. So let’s get to the actual ingredients that make up a title block. Of course, now that we are printing out sheets less often, this might not be as important as it once was but I still see contractors using full-size sets on the job site. If you number vertically starting on the right, you can flip the page partially open. Since printed out drawings are typically stapled along the left-hand side of the page, it would be better to fill of the sheet on the side opposite the staples just so you don’t have to open the set wide up in order to see drawing 04 in the corner by the staple. While I will admit that what I am about to say might be some outdated thinking, at times I still embrace the old ways. Some people might think that – just like reading a book or anything else – you start in the upper left-hand corner and work your way across the page to the right until they reach the end at which point you drop down a row and continue (much like how you are reading this sentence). My preference is that the drawing numbers start in the bottom right-hand corner and work their way up the page until they reach the top, and at that point, you go back down to the bottom of the page – essentially one column over and continue working your way up the page again. I have added a few guidelines on the image above to show that all of these drawings are lined up with one another for the most part – it just visually keeps the drawing organized and tidy in its appearance … but we need to talk a minute about how to identify those drawings – why is detail 04 located where it is? For example, detail 01 “Plan Detail” can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet but if I wanted to reference that drawing elsewhere in the set, I would call it out as “o1/A2.82” which not only identifies the detail number but also the page in which you can find it. Most architectural sheets have more than one drawing on them and in order to assist with referencing their location elsewhere, most will have individual numbers. First off is the numbering of the drawings on the page. I am going to break this Architectural Graphics 101 post up into just a few small parts – some of which I have skimmed over in the past but it’s worth repeating. ![]() I am also going to take a few moments to introduce the concept of how you number these drawings (i.e. In just about every conceivable way, this title block has all the parts that you would expect to find on a drawing – but maybe you don’t know what those are. I have been beaten up for so long on the use of chisel fonts that I’ve decided to leave that alone (for now). They haven’t asked, and I haven’t offered … but other than pen weight and arrowheads, most of the drawing conventions that are in place align with my own thoughts on the matter. For the record, nobody at my current office wants my opinion about how our drawings are laid out. I thought I would start with a title block from my current office – BOKA Powell. It’s been 3 years and 16 days since my last architectural graphics post and just like the last time I had a steaming hot bowl of Wolf brand chili, that’s too long. After a very long hiatus, Architectural Graphics 101 is rising from the ashes like the proverbial Phoenix. Architectural Graphics are a topic that it seems everybody has an interest in discussing – or at the very least, looking at for comparison purposes. ![]() sheep would have been pronounced more like “shape” me as “may” mine as “meen” shire as “sheer” mate as “maat” out as “oot” house as “hoose” flour as “floor” boot as “boat” mode as “mood” etc). In Middle English (for instance in the time of Chaucer), the long vowels were generally pronounced very much like the Latin-derived Romance languages of Europe (e.g. It affected words of both native ancestry as well as borrowings from French and Latin. It was, however, a peculiarly English phenomenon, and contemporary and neighbouring languages like French, German and Spanish were entirely unaffected. The causes of the shift are still highly debated, although an important factor may have been the very fact of the large intake of loanwords from the Romance languages of Europe during this time, which required a different kind of pronunciation. It was largely during this short period of time that English lost the purer vowel sounds of most European languages, as well as the phonetic pairing between long and short vowel sounds. ![]() Many languages have undergone vowel shifts, but the major changes of the English vowel shift occurred within the relatively short space of a century or two, quite a sudden and dramatic shift in linguistic terms. In fact, the shift probably started very gradually some centuries before 1400, and continued long after 1700 (some subtle changes arguably continue even to this day). A major factor separating Middle English from Modern English is known as the Great Vowel Shift, a radical change in pronunciation during the 15th, 16th and 17th Century, as a result of which long vowel sounds began to be made higher and further forward in the mouth (short vowel sounds were largely unchanged). |
